Thomas Martin

Due to his largesse, Pulaski was spared from the torch by Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman during the Civil War. Gen. Sherman garrisoned his men in and around Pulaski during the middle of the war. For a financial consideration of $3,000, he left Pulaski intact prior to his march to Atlanta.

It was in Mr. Martin's home (now Community Bank, located at College and Second Streets) that a local social club received its name - the Ku Klux Klan. He was never aware of this occurrence prior to his death in 1870.
